Christmas Blitz - results

We had our Christmas Blitz on Tuesday night with 21 participants. Thanks to all who attended for making it a fun and enjoyable night.

We used the same time-handicapping system work out by Sean Nolan last year and again it worked well with the top of the leader board throwing up a nice mix of players on different ratings.

Thanks to all those who helped out with setting up the tables and boards, refreshments, tidying up etc.

Winner (5 out of 5)
Brian Gallagher

Joe Rafferty - An Appreciation

Joe was originally a member of the Caissa Chess Club, located in the White Horse Bar, Burgh Quay, Dublin 1. However, Joe wished to set up a more local chess club and, with the help of PC Quinn, he helped found Trinity Chess Club based in the Trinity Sports and Leisure cente in Donaghmede in 1982.
Joe was also a founder member of the Trinity Sports and Leisure centre and used his "good influence" to secure a small room located adjacent to the Squash Court for the chess club. This room was by no means generous in size and was probably the smallest chess venue in Dublin - if not the Country at the time! This room had no windows.
Nevertheless we all managed to squeeze in to it and we had some very enjoyable chess matches there. One drawback was that on the same night as our chess night an Aerobics class was held next door in the Squash court. This meant that we could hear all the hits of Madonna and the other stars of the time belted out on a ghetto-blaster while trying to concentrate on the chess. Certainly an intimidating atmosphere for any opposition!
From there we graduated to the back bar and then to the boardroom in the Trinity Sports & Leisure Centre with about a two year spell in the Baldoyle Youth club in between times.
Unfortunately a new Committee arrived in the Trinity Sports & Leisure Centre and we were no longer welcome in the Boardroom so it was a case of moving on. Again Joe used his good influence with a friend who was the caretaker of St. Kevin's School in Donaghmede to secure a playing venue. One drawback however was that we had to vacate the building when the caretaker arrived back at around 10.30 pm!
On one occasion I remember playing a League match and noticed the caretaker hovering around as it was getting late. I suggested to my opponent that we might adjourn the match which you could do at that time. He was initially reluctant to do this, but I had to explain to him that the lights would be going out shortly and that if he wanted to he could spend the night there. Needless to say he decided to adjourn the match.
Our stay in St. Kevin's School did not last long after that and we were on the move again. This time we managed to secure a room in Naomh Barrog GAA Club thanks to the goodwill of the Naomh Barrog Committee and soon after changed the name to Naomh Barrog Chess club.
Joe was a fully committed member of the chess club and very often was one of the few left at the end of the evening putting the chess equipment away. At that stage we would usually adjourn to the Bar upstairs where Joe enlivened the conversation and the craic.
Joe could always be relied on to get our chess stationery as he had a good contact that ensured we never ran short of chess score sheets,
There was also a very human side to Joe which some people may not be aware of. If anyone needed help or if anything needed to be mended Joe was always on hand. He saw to it that the Club notice board was properly fixed, that Tom was taking garlic pills for his cough and that John Forde had something to cure his sinus problem. Joe was forever making life more livable for those around him.
I myself recall a period when, after surgery, I spent two weeks recovering in the Orthopaedic Hospital in Clontarf. Joe was a frequent visitor to see me. He used to bring fruit, sweets and a chess board and, to the amusement of the other patients, we had some entertaining chess matches.
I along with a lot of other people have very fond memories of Joe.

North Dublin Chess League - Final Night

The final night of the North Dublin Chess League took place on Tuesday 23rd August 2011 in Naomh Barrog Chess club. This league was organised by members of Naomh Barrog Chess club and used a new format which was deemed a success by the competitors. Players played in their clubs against opponents from near-by clubs on a round-robin basis. If the scheduled date or venue did not suit, the players contacted each other directly to arrange a new date and venue. Players used the league website to enter the results and rescheduled dates with the league table automatically updated.

The results were as follows

Pool A
1st - Sean Nolan (Naomh Barrog) & Miroslav Gallik
3rd - Shane Lee

Pool B
1st - Barry Plummer (Naomh Barrog)
2nd - Tom O'Sullivan
3rd - Justin Corry (Naomh Barrog)

Further details and a cross-table can be found here

Thanks from the organisers to the members of Naomh Barrog chess club for the use of their facilities on the final night.

This year was run on a pilot basis with a small ratings band. The plan for next year is to make the competition available to all ratings bands - details to follow.

Barrog players do well in Dublin City Open

Naomh Barrog Chess Club Players score in Dublin City Open

Six members of our Club members played in the recent Dublin City Open Tournament – one in the Majors (Justin Corry), three in the Challengers (Tom Collins, Stephen Kelly and Aridas Tolkus) and two in the Juniors (Joe Rafferty and Andrew O’Brien).

In the Challengers four players tied at the top with 5 out of 6 points. Two of the four were Naomh Barrog players Stephen Kelly and Aridas Tolkus. A tie-break gave first position to Aridas and runner-up to Stephen.

Andrew O’Brien in the Junior Section finished with a creditable 3 out of 6. After the third round he had scored 2.5 out of 3 - a very impressive score for someone who had never played in a Tournament or a competitive chess programme before.

While our remaining players didn’t score as many as they would have wished, they each enjoyed, and benefited from, what was an exciting and well organised event.

Good North Dublin Chess League showing
Two Naomh Barrog players scored well in this league. Barry Plummer won his section with 5 out of six. Sean Nolan shared first place in his section with 6 out of 7.

2011 AGM

Naomh Barrog Chess Club AGM 2011 Report

The Club AGM was held on Tuesday 5th July 2011.

Seventy-five percent of the current membership attended.

The O’Hanlon A and Killane Shield teams were congratulated on winning their trophies.

The Bodley team was congratulated on coming a creditable fourth in their league.

The O’Hanlon B team was congratulated on surviving relegation.

The organisers/controllers of the Autumn Swiss, Club Championship and Rapid Play competitions were thanked and congratulated.

The designer/administrator of our website (Sayuri Collins) was thanked and applauded for her skill in the presentation of the club’s affairs.

The Treasurer reported that, although we had spent a considerable sum on new tables and clocks last year, we still had a small surplus. However, fees for the LCU and ICU would shortly fall due, so payment of membership fees as soon as possible would be appreciated.

The Chairman (Martin Molloy), Secretary (Joe Rafferty), Treasurer (Michael O’Dwyer) and Team Selector (Sean Nolan) were each thanked for their work and re-elected by acclaim.

Decisions:
  1. Start a Ladder Competition next autumn.
  2. The 2012 Club Championship to be held between January and May.
  3. Investigate having the Club Championship results graded.
  4. Investigate compiling a database of played competition games.
  5. Members to be guaranteed a minimum of three rated games during the winter leagues.

Bobby Fischer Against the World will be playing in IFI Dublin on the 15th of July.

Officially selected at Sundance Film Festival Bobby Fischer Against the World traces the Grand Master from child prodigy to Cold War hero to controversial recluse, with particular focus on the world-renowned victory over Spassky which transformed Fischer into an Icon. The film brings rare archival footage of Bobby as well as insightful interviews with Kasparov, Susan Polgar, Sam Sloan and Dr. Anthony Saidy.

The film is already drumming up plenty of national press interest as well as from publications Chess, Chessbase, New in Chess. While a recent London preview saw Magnes Carlsen and Gawain Jones in attendance.

Naomh Barrog through to Killane Cup Final!

Great 4-2 win by Naomh Barrog in the Killane Shield against Rathmines on 26 April 2011. This was especially noteworthy since Rathmines had the pick of the Rathmines teams that have just come first and second in the Ennis. Tom extended his O'Hanlon-Killane run in style to 10 out of 11. Also wins for Airidas and Sean.

Well done to our representatives in the Leinster Championships

We had two players in the Leinster Championships.

Sean Nolan played in the 1600 - 1999 section where he was 15th seed but managed an excellent 7th place with 3.5 out of 6 and a tournament performance in the high 1700s.

Tom Collins played as 11th seed in the 1200 to 1599 section where he matched his seeding by coming 11th with 2.5 out of 6. His tournament performance also matched his rating. The weekend had promised so much more for Tom having taken his 2.5 points from the first 3 games but it wasn't to be!

Each draw will be made beforehand, usually the day following the previous round. The draw will be on the Club’s Blog and website and, as far as possible, I will inform members of the draw. This will give anybody unable to make the Tuesday an opportunity to play their game on the Saturday prior to the Tuesday of the match. It may be necessary to play some Round 5 games on 31st May.

There’s a slight possibility that some dates may have to be adjusted to accommodate Willie Brennan Cup or Killane Shield.

Rules:
1. Tuesday games start sharp 7:30. 1hr 30min for each opponent. Saturday games start 2:30 or as convenient.
2. There will now be two prizes [not two competitions!] – Senior Champion (for whoever wins the competition outright); Junior Champion (for the highest placed player graded below 1200).
3. Should a member graded below 1200 be the outright winner then they will be the Senior Champion and the 2nd highest scoring member below 1200 will be the Junior Champion.
4. In the event of a tie for 1st place there will be a play off between those on highest score. Should that result in a tie that will be a further play off with reversed colours. If again there is a tie, then a draw for colours in a lighting game (15 min each).
5. Each winner will receive a (small) plaque to keep. The Senior Champion will retain the cup for one year.
6. The current ICU grading list will apply.
7. ICU rules apply.

Selectors Report for the 2010-2011 league season

2010-2011 was a great season all round for Naomh Barrog Chess Club. We achieved the following goals this year:

  • For the first time since the club was set up in 2004 we had 3 teams in the main Leinster Chess Leagues (plus one more in the Novices leagues).

  • The O’Hanlon B team stayed up.

  • The O’Hanlon A team won the O’Hanlon cup for the clubs first time

Speaking as selector for the various teams and captain of the A team I must unreservedly congratulate everyone who played for us. The level of performance this year was underlined by the fact that one third of all the players that played for Naomh Barrog this year won a board prize. All players young and old, new players as well as our more established performed excellently. All the achievements were especially noteworthy since the substitute players in the A team and B team panels could not play for the other team since they were both in the same league.

O’ Hanlon A Team

The A Team not only won the league but did so in style averaging close to 5 out of 6 per game (49.5 points from 10 games). Looking at all the results on the web for past seasons (they go back to the 2003-2004 season) these are some of the records that the A team’s performance has achieved:

  • Only team in any division in any year to have every player that played or subbed for the team score between 75% and 100% on the games they played.

  • Highest points scored for any O’Hanlon Cup winning team (despite the fact that most teams in the past had an 11 game season)

Great result by all players from John Carroll who won the game he subbed to Justin and Tom with their 9 out of 10 results. The really amazing thing was that as the year went on all the players on the A team were improving.

O’Hanlon B Team

To be honest at the start of the season we all knew that it was going to be a big ask for the B team to avoid relegation. In every match played during the year the team was the underdog. The lads kept plugging away, however, all season fighting for every half point and regarding any poor result as an opportunity to learn something during a game review at the club. The win over Elm Mount towards the end of the season was a great result but to be honest there was not a single easy point or half point given away all season. Austin’s board prize winning performance was a tremendous help to the team. The increase in playing strength that Austin has displayed this year is really astounding. All in all each B Team member should be very proud with their achievement and the way that the team spirit was kept up throughout the league.

Bodley Cup Team

Well I think that the Bodley Cup team were unlucky that the league was so strong this year. They came quite close to getting a promotion. Joe and Martin both came very close to getting board prizes. One of the good features of the Bodley Cup campaign was all the new players that got blooded this year. I look forward to several of the players that have played in the Bodley Cup team playing in the other two teams in future years.

Goals for Next Year The big goal for the next league season 2011-2012 is to consolidate our second team’s position in the O’Hanlon Cup. I think that promotion for the Bodley Cup team should be achievable and I suppose that winning the Ennis would be a bonus! New players are always welcome and with any luck we may be able to strengthen our existing teams and enter a 4th team in the leagues. So if you are a non member reading this and are interested in joining a club which can both improve your chess (Justin’s rating increased by more last year than any other adult on the ICU rating list) and a place where you can have a few social pints, you would be more than welcome. Congratulations again to all the players that played for us this year and I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did. Now to win a couple of the summer cups!
