Rapid Play 2011 - Final Standings

The Rapid Play tournament concluded last night with an excellent victory for Stephen Kelly with 5 wins out of 5. Harry Howard and Austin Blake weren't far behind in second with 4 points. The best junior prize was shared between Katherine Bolger and Serguei Koustov with 3 points.

Once again Seán's handicapping worked out well with the top 6 showing a good mix of higher-rated players, medium-rated players, new members and juniors.

The excellent attendance and good spirit shown made for two fun and enjoyable nights.

Rules

1. All rules of chess apply, except where specifically amended by these rules.
2. Where a player is not writing down his moves an illegal move loses immediately ( a move is made when a player lets go of the piece on its new square).
3. Airidas and John Carroll choose the side the clock is on - Black choses otherwise.
4. As per normal a move may not be begun until the opponent has completed his move (he need not have pressed the clock yet).
5. The clocks must be operated by the hand that makes the move.
6. To win the game on time, the player claiming the win must have sufficient material to checkmate his opponent, however unlikely the checkmate.
7. During the game the clock must not be picked up by either player.
8. Players who have brought a digital clock may use it if they so wish.
9. Players can pause the clock for toilet breaks (optional) but opponent can continue to study the board.

Advice to lower rated players

Your one advantage in this tournament is the extra time you have, so make full use of it. Take time to think, and do not move too quickly.

Summer Cups

We have entered 2 teams in the William Brennan Cup and the Killane Shield. Anyone not named on the teams may sub (if available & interested) on any of the teams - although once they sub for a team in a competition then they may only sub for that team in that competition. This leaves us with strong subs that may be available as some have asked not to be named on the teams as they may be on holidays.

Club Calendar for 2011/12

The club calendar for 2010/11 was largely based on my ideas so I am not best placed to say what was good and what was bad about it.
I would appreciate it if members could add comments on what they liked and what they would change for 2011/12.

Successful Final Round to Leinster Chess League

Naomh Barróg enjoyed a successful final day to the Leinster Chess League.  The O'Hanlon A team beat second placed Kilkenny 4-2 to secure the trophy while the O'Hanlon B team took 2.5 points off Phibsboro to avoid relegation.

Unfortunately, the Bodley team was much weakened by providing subs to the O'Hanlon and could only many a half point against Blanchardstown.

North Dublin Chess League

Two members of Naomh Barróg (Justin Corry & Sean Nolan) have taken the initiative in launching the North Dublin Chess League which will have its inaugural year in 2011.

The league will be entered by individuals rather than clubs (although hopefully with the cooperation of the clubs). The aim is that each player will play approximately 5 games over the summer of 2011.

Games will be 1.5 hours per player per game. For the inaugural year, the league will target players with an ICU rating in the range 1400-1800.

O'Hanlon B 1.5 Kilkenny 4.5

The O'Hanlon B team gathered a credible 1.5 points at home to a strong Kilkenny team. This keeps alive their hopes of avoiding relegation.  It also does the A team a favour.  They require just a half-point from the final match against Kilkenny.

O'Hanlon A beat Finglas while Bodley lose

The O'Hanlon A team won on all 5 boards last night to record a 5.5 to 0.5 win away to Finglas.  This gives a minimum 4 point lead going into the last match versus Kilkenny.

Unfortunately, the Bodley team's chances of promotion appear to be gone after a 4-1 home defeat by Inchicore.
